“He was going down the street near her corner, walking along in the direction of her house at twilight, as the day was fading, as the dark of night set in.” Proverbs 7:8-9
Solomon sets the scene whereby a poor, senseless young man thoroughly lacking in wisdom, finds himself in the wrong place at the wrong time. He is about to slide onto the slippery slope of adultery, largely dues to his surroundings. Darkness is falling, he’s alone, opportunity lurks at the street corner, and he is doomed!
Adultery is this guy’s temptation, but our “DARK OF NIGHT” can come in a myriad of disguises…
A cocktail party where drinks flow freely, a friend’s open medicine cabinet choc-full of pills, a shopping mall and credit card combo, the opportunity to knock our colleagues down and out on our way up and up, an illuminated stage with a captive audience, or the privacy of a basement with a computer.
Our dark of night is anywhere Satan can hone in and lead us down that road at twilight. It’s whatever our weakness, illness, or heady high is with the potential to lead to our demise. THAT is our dark of night. That is the place to avoid at all costs, and it takes wisdom on our part.
God’s wisdom.
Verse 2 says, “Keep my commands and you will live; guard my teachings as the apple of your eye.”
God’s Word, His teachings and wisdom are to be cherished, because they will lead us forward and keep us from the dark of night. Jesus is the very opposite of darkness. He says:
“I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” John 8:12
It’s a decision. A choice for us to make. We don’t have to walk in the dark of night.
Be on guard at all times, pray for God’s wisdom and choose light!
